Restored 1926 Underwood Standard Typewriter No.5 – New Ribbon, Original Spools, Dust Cover – Made in USA

We, at London Typewriters, are proud to present for sale this antique Underwood Standard Typewriter No.5, which was manufactured by one of the world’s leading typewriter manufacturers, at the beginning of the previous century.

Underwood Standard Typewriter No.5 was a big success for the Underwood Typewriter company, elevating the production of typewriters to the next level and establishing this model as a popular and widely used office machine.

We received this magnificent typewriter in a very poor state and saved it from being scrapped.

The typewriter has received a new lease of life after it was dismantled, repaired, cleaned of dust and spider webs, then oiled and carefully put back together to its original glory. The crumbling feet were replaced with 3D printed ones, to stabilise the machine. The typewriter works well apart from the tab key (used for setting to type in tables).

The decals are well preserved as you can see from the photos. But the minimal patina reminds us about the age and the quality of build of this office typewriter.

The machine has a cork platen (roller) which was used to reduce the noise of striking keys.

Office typewriters in the past were rarely sold with cases. As the Underwood Standard No.5 is an office machine (bigger in size and heavier in weight), it is not easily portable. However, the bespoke dust cover is provided to protect the typewriter.

The original spools, which were specifically designed for the Underwood typewriters are installed together with a new black ribbon. So, the typing experience with this Underwood can start immediately, upon arrival.
