Working 1933 Corona Special (Folding) Typewriter – New Ribbon, Case – Made In USA

London Typewriters offer for sale a Corona Special typewriter, from 1933, manufactured in the USA.

After standard typewriters became less of a novelty, the Corona folding typewriter became the most popular portable typewriter in the 1910s. Designed in the very early 1900s it became a huge commercial success in the world of typewriter manufacturing during that period. This success was partly due to the fact that office clerks realised the convenience of moving away from handwritten documents to typed ones, consequently driving the sale of this particular typewriter. Very often, the demand for Coronas was outweighed by supply.

As the Corona was compact, folding and weighed only 9 1/2lb, it was also the most comfortable device to use when travelling either for pleasure or business. As an example, two American suffragettes travelling in 1916 across South and North America to campaign and gather public opinion about women’s rights to vote, carried a black folding Corona with them to document the results of their campaign.

During almost forty years of manufacturing of the Corona folding typewriter, it underwent several technical changes. However, the exterior stayed true almost to the original design.

The 1933 Corona Special typewriter offered for sale, has retained all its functions and types well. The keys are protected with glass and metal rims.

It comes with a new black ribbon and can be used straight after arrival. The original case is provided.

Overall condition is good. Minor signs of age and use are present – please refer to photos. Please note some patina on the typewriter is very visible.

This Corona Special typewriter would suit typists of any profession or typing style. It would be a talking centrepiece at weddings, corporate events or exhibitions.
