Working Rare 1958 Tower Chieftain II Typewriter – New Ribbon, Case – Made For Sears, Roebuck and Co
London Typewriters offer for sale a working 1958 Tower Chieftain II portable typewriter.
Sears, Roebuck and Co, one of the largest department stores in the USA and a mail ordering catalogue, were promoting and selling some goods from manufacturers by re-branding their products into the Sears’ name. This was in agreement with the major manufacturers. Because of volume sales through Sears, some typewriter brands were manufacturing their products specifically for Sears, under a different brand name. Another aim pursued by Sears, was to entrench their brand name into the buying public’s mind, even though it was essentially the same product.
The Tower Chieftain II typewriter was the original Skyriter typewriter manufactured by Smith-Corona. The Skyriter was widely available on the market. However, the Tower Chieftain II was only sold by Sears. So, if the buyer wanted to purchase the Tower typewriter, they had to visit a Sears outlet.
This Tower Chieftain II offered for sale, is in good working order. The keys have a round shape in the middle to make touch more comfortable. The keys work smoothly and this makes the whole typing experience easy. All the mechanisms work as intended. The bell provides a shallow ‘Ding’ sound. The typewriter is equipped with the touch control lever. So, you can adjust the keys to suit your own touch preference. There is a new black ink ribbon installed and the typewriter is ready for action. It comes with the case which has a soft handle.
The overall condition is good. Minor signs of age and use are present – please refer to photos.
The Tower Chieftain II would be suitable to take with you to a writing retreat as it is relatively small in size and light in weight. It would also suit typists with any typing ability and skill. This retro looking grey typewriter with the green keys would look very attractive on the desk or be as eye-catching addition to any thematic event.
