Working 1930’s Smith Premier Chum Portable Typewriter – New Ribbon, Case – Made in UK and USA
Working Smith Premier Chum Portable vintage, manual portable typewriter in London, UK. After some research on the serial code, I concluded that it was manufactured at the end of 1930’s. The model is assembled in Great Britain, from parts made in the USA, as the manufacture found this a more cost effective way to continue producing typewriter during the Great American Depression.
The Smith Premier is restored, serviced and works very well! The comfortable glass keys in metal rims are responsive and it provides a enjoyable typing experience. The backspace, carriage return lever, the shift keys, carriage lock, margin setters, ribbon selector (for the colour change), the carriage release lever, the paper guide and the paper release lever all work as intended. The typewriter is fitted with a new black ribbon so you can type as soon as you get it, without any hassle. Also comes with the original case.
The overall condition is good. The keys type well and the typewriter works as expected. The original carry handle is missing and has been replaced with a hand made one. Other signs of use and age are present.
The Smith Premier Chum Portable typewriter would be ideal for writers, authors and journalists, especially in the creative field. It would also make a unique gift, as a pleasant sound from the be,l at the end of every line, provides a great incentive to write the next line!
